Paradise in the Mediterranean. Take a walk along the fine sandy beaches, stroll through the romantic old town centres and villages or just enjoy the vast variety of Mediterranean and international cuisine in one of the many cafés and restaurants. Whatever you do, this is a place where you can truly relax. The people of Majorca are proud of their rich culture, their traditions and their values. And rightly so: the history of Majorca, from an ancient cave-dwelling culture to a popular modern holiday region which for many people from elsewhere has become the centre of their lives or even home, is unique.
The island lives up to every expectation. In the rugged valleys on the west coast, walkers find peace and tranquillity, whereas the coastline offers welcoming beaches and miles of fun. Whether you are looking for a party town or select marinas, spa centres or active holidays, this island offers a vast choice of possibilities for sport, relaxation and culture. Those who play golf, go cycling or sail will find a host of opportunities to practise their favourite sports. Fancy an exotic car or a flashy yacht? No problem: one of the many car rentals and yacht brokers will make your dream come true. The stylish white-painted beach clubs are bustling with the rich and beautiful. Gourmets will get their moneys worth: internationally-renowned cooks boasting several stars conjure up their top-class culinary creations in the hotels and restaurants of the island. And Majorcan wines have become some of the best in Spain.
Thanks to its excellent modern facilities, easy access and pleasant climate all year round, Majorca is the ideal place for your new home or your dream holiday home. Safety, first-class healthcare and international schools add to the attractions of living on the island.
Majorca has many faces: come and discover the most beautiful parts of this pearl of the Mediterranean.
The Port of Palma de Mallorca
The capital of the island, Palma, is more than just the economic, political and cultural centre of the Balearic Islands. With one of the most beautiful and best-preserved historic town centres in the Mediterranean and its exclusive promenade, the Paseo Marítimo, Palma is also a good place to live in. Wide boulevards, innumerable shops and boutiques, restaurants and pavement cafés form the backdrop for a bustling, colourful street-life. When you visit the market halls or the old cafés in the old town, time seems to stand still.
Also nicknamed the Hollywood of Majorca, Son Vida, the north-eastern district of Palma, has two 5-star hotels as well as several golf courses and spas. This is where some of the most exclusive properties on the island are to be found. Not far from the capital are the popular beach resorts of Portixol, Cala Mayor, San Agustín and Cas Català with cosy restaurants beside beaches and marinas.
If you buy property in or near Palma, you can enjoy all the flair of a stunning, pulsating Mediterranean city – and from most places also a gorgeous view over the old town or the sweeping bay.
Puerto Portals
Majorca's south-west is a region of fascinating contradictions. The spectacular mountains of the sparsely populated Sierra de Tramuntana contrast with the modern but romantic villages on the coast. The terraces of the villas and apartments in the hills offer breathtaking panoramic views of both sea and mountains.
The coast is lined with turquoise-coloured bays, marinas of all sizes, lively villages and a scattering of offshore islets. This is a paradise, especially for boat-owners. But fans of other sports will also find what they are looking for: golf courses, tennis clubs and diving centres are all to be found here. On top of that, a host of excellent restaurants serving Mediterranean and international cuisine offer delicious meals in a relaxed atmosphere.
Very popular too are the seaside towns of Puerto Andratx, Puerto Portals and El Toro. Stylish boutiques, pavement cafés and gourmet restaurants rub shoulders here. The distinctive charm of the island remains just the same: fishermen carry on doing their jobs, music and a whiff of local specialities drift out of tapas bars. Without any doubt, savoir-vivre is part of everyday life here.
Santa Ponsa, Paguera or Illetas are also lively places. The beautiful, family -friendly beaches, the colourful night-life and the vast range of sports, restaurants and shopping give them an irresistible feel.
If you are looking for something a little quieter, you will prefer places like Calviá, Sol de Mallorca, Bendinat or Andratx where you can go hill-walking, cycling, play golf or just relax and enjoy nature.
The south-west coast is a modern, developed region offering excellent facilities: schools, doctors and shopping facilities are all within easy reach. Thanks to its location, amenities and the varied range of leisure options available there, the south-west is probably the most popular part of the island, with the highest, most stable property prices. Whether you own a holiday home or live here permanently you can enjoy all the advantages of the pleasant Majorca lifestyle.
Country House in Llucmajor
Countless unspoilt bays, marvellous beaches, romantic cycling and walking routes among the almond and orange groves, idyllic villages and excellent restaurants – the south-east of Majorca is a paradise for sun-worshippers, water sports enthusiasts, those who just want to chill out, golfers and lovers of the finer things in life. Although this region offers a wide range of high-quality leisure options, it has been spared from mass tourism and its main distinguishing feature is the magnificent, unspoilt landscape.
Llucmajor, the largest municipality on the island, stretches all the way from Playa de Palma down south to the Caribbean-like beach of Es Trenc. Property prices in idyllic villages like Campos, Felanitx and the seaside villages of Santanyí, Portocolom and Cala Dor, are still relatively low, despite the excellent location and facilities. Locals and residents from elsewhere live mainly in houses in the country and apartments on the coast, at one with nature and the charming surroundings.
